Morning Affirmations is the habit of speaking one to three specific positives aloud when you wake up — about yourself, your values, or your life. It draws on self-affirmation research, which typically asks people to reflect on their core personal values.
Start small: pick one specific, true statement, such as a quality you value in yourself or something you're grateful for, and say it aloud before reaching for your phone. Over time you can build up to two or three affirmations.
A meta-analysis of 129 tests found that self-affirmation interventions have small but significant positive effects on self-perception, general and social well-being, and reduction of psychological barriers, with benefits that were both immediate and long-lasting (Zhang et al., 2025).
In a large trial with Chinese adolescents during the pandemic, a values-affirmation exercise improved life satisfaction, mental health, and self-esteem, though it did not affect depression, anxiety, or loneliness (Yan et al., 2023). A trial with adults with psoriasis also found short-term reductions in anxiety and depression and improved well-being (Łakuta, 2021).
A review of the field notes that timely affirmations can improve education, health, and relationship outcomes, sometimes with benefits lasting months or years (Cohen & Sherman, 2014). Effects tend to be small, so treat this habit as a gentle well-being support rather than a treatment.
