Nightly Tidy is the simple habit of resetting key areas of your home before bed: clearing surfaces, putting things back where they belong, and leaving shared spaces in order for the next morning. It is not a deep clean, just a short, consistent reset.
Start small. Pick one or two areas, like the kitchen counter and the living room table, and spend five to ten minutes putting things away. Doing it at the same time each night helps it become automatic.
Researchers study the opposite of this habit under the name household chaos, meaning disorganisation and environmental confusion at home. A scoping review of 112 studies found that household chaos has been associated with a range of adverse child, parent, and family outcomes (Marsh et al., 2020).
Studies suggest a calmer home may support adult well-being too. Household chaos contributed to maternal stress over and above fatigue in a large sample of mothers (Vaschina et al., 2025), and higher chaos was linked to depressive, anxiety and stress symptoms in mothers of twins (Yalcintas et al., 2021).
There is also early evidence connecting a chaotic home to sleep: parents of infants with higher chaos scores reported more sleep disturbances and sleep-related impairment (Lucchini et al., 2025). A small trial even tested an intervention to reduce household chaos in families with toddlers (Andeweg et al., 2024). A nightly reset is a practical way to keep everyday disorder from building up.
